Top Ten Adam Sandler movies

Updated on December 23, 2011

Adam Sandler is one of my favourite actors. He's totally hilarious - the king of toilet humour. And even though all his roles tend to be pretty similar I find him just as funny in each one.

From what I can see he invented the dumb role that paved the way for characters like Joey and Ross in Friends. Some critics say Adam Sandler can't act but I think that he's a legendary American actor of recent times.

You may not agree- you may think The Waterboy should be at number one or that Mr Deeds should be on the list - but this is my list of top ten Adam Sandler films. Enjoy!

1. Happy Gilmore

Happy desperately wants to be a pro hockey play but the only problem is - he's no good. Then one day Happy discovers that he has an extraordinary gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards with his unconventional swing. His coach and publicist calm his temper help him to become a golf legend. Laugh-a-minute with some touching moments.

2. The Waterboy

Sandler continues his tradition of idiot comedy in this, his second blockbuster, when he plays retarded Bobby Boucher who has an obsession with water. When he's sacked as waterboy from his college football team he joins their rivals and becomes an incredible quarterback. But his over-protective mom has other plans for her son's new found stardom and love interests.

3. The Wedding Singer

Wanna-be rockstar Robbie Hart is a small-town wedding singer whose life shatters when his fiancé dumps him. He unexpectedly finds a new love in Julia, played by Drew Barrymore, while helping her prepare for her wedding. Lot's of 80s jokes about MTV that were in at the time and helped to make the film an instant box-office hit.

4. Big Daddy

Layabout Sonny Koufaux tries to win back his girlfriend by taking in a toddler who turns up on his doorstep. The kid is his roommates' from a one night stand but the pair become emotionally attached and by the end of they are insepearble. Sonny adopts the tot and wins back his woman. Funny and crude with some touching moments.

5. Anger Management

Angry outbursts are a trait of many Sandler characters but this is his first film directly about anger. Sandler plays a clothes designer for chubby pets who's ordered by a court to have anger management after an outburst on a plane. He attends therapy with an equally odd counsellor played by Jack Nicholson. Twists and turns but an all-round happy ending.

6. Billy Madison

Another dopey comedy that Sandler does so well. All round sponger Billy Madison is ordered to retake grades 1 - 12 by his father before he's allowed to inherit the family business. Great infant humour and a cameo appearance from Steve Buscemi make this worth watching.

7. Funny People

Comedian George Simmons learns he's terminally ill and takes a rookie comic under his wing. The pair form close bonds as Simmons looks deeply at his unhappy life and sets about changing his materialistic ways. Hilarious scenes and references to Myspace and Facebook. Interestingly, this is Sandler's only film about a stand-up comic and Simmons resembles Sandler's own life from when he started out in stand up then became a comedy actor.

8. Reign Over Me

Sandler's heaviest film, he plays widower Charlie Fineman who lost his wife and two kids on 9/11. Charlie slips into depression and shuts himself away from his friends and family as he struggles to face his loss. Ex-college roomy Alan Johnson is the only one who can save him. Survivor's guilt, post traumatic stress and mental health are all tackled well.

9. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

Aplha-male firefighetrs Adam Sandler and Kevin James have to move in together and pretend to be gay. Sandler, who plays a serial womaniser Chuck, and Larry, who's worried about his camp son, end up becoming more tolerant toward homosexuals. This is an interestinga and funny film that champions gay rights.

10. 50 First Dates

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler team for the first time since The Wedding Singer is this box-office hit romantic comedy. Sandler plays a lothario who spends his nights on a Hawaiian islands seducing tourists. But he unexpectedly falls for Lucy who has short-term memory loss. Sandler has to win her over every night after she forgets the previous date, hence 50 first dates. Cute and funny.
